The Accounting Standards Committee (ASC), operating under the Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority (ACRA), has publicly endorsed key aspects of the International Accounting Standards Board’s (IASB) proposed update to equity method accounting.

The feedback, submitted on 17 January 2025, responds to the IASB’s September 2024 Exposure Draft (ED) concerning IAS 28 Investments in Associates and Joint Ventures. ACRA specifically commended the IASB’s initiative to tackle persistent stakeholder concerns regarding the practical application of the equity method for investments in associates under complex scenarios.

Focus on Consistency and Clarity:
ACRA highlighted that resolving identified application challenges is crucial. It stated that successful implementation of the proposed amendments would “help minimise inconsistencies in practice, enhancing the comparability and clarity of financial information for users of financial statements.” This endorsement underscores the importance placed by a major Asian financial hub on achieving greater uniformity in how the equity method is applied globally.

The IASB is currently reviewing all feedback received on the ED before finalizing amendments to IAS 28. ACRA’s supportive stance adds significant weight to the IASB’s efforts to refine this critical area of investment accounting
