This technical note consolidates the key personal tax reliefs available to Singapore tax residents for Year of Assessment 2026. The reliefs are categorized into three groups: (i) manually claimable reliefs, (ii) automatic reliefs, and (iii) voluntary contribution-based reliefs.

Manually Claimable Reliefs (Critical Action Required)

These must be actively claimed during tax filing. Failure to do so results in forfeiture.

Relief Type Conditions Relief Amount
Spouse Relief Supporting spouse with annual income ≤ $8,000. $2,000
Parent / Grandparent / In-Law Relief Supporting dependents (max 2 claimants per dependent). Allocation among siblings flexible. If any sibling lives with dependent, all can claim “lived with” rate. $9,000 (lived with) / $5,500 (not lived with)
Qualifying Child Relief (QCR) Unmarried child <16, or full-time student, or child with income ≤ $8,000. No cap on number of children. $4,000 per child
Working Mother’s Child Relief (WMCR) Only for working mothers. Percentage of earned income (pre-2024 birth) or fixed amount (post-2024 birth). Pre-2024: 15%/20%/25% of earned income (1st/2nd/3rd+ child). Post-2024: $8k/$10k/$12k fixed.
Grandparent Caregiver Relief (GCR) Child ≤12 cared for by grandparent (own or in-law) with income ≤ $8,000. Claimable per caregiver (not splittable). Stackable with Parent Relief for same grandparent. $3,000
Sibling Relief Supporting a disabled sibling. $5,500
Life Insurance Relief Only applicable if total CPF contributions in the year ≤ $5,000. Up to $5,000 (less CPF contributions)

Important Interaction Note:
For the same dependent (e.g., mother), Spouse Relief and Parent Relief are mutually exclusive. If father claims Spouse Relief for mother, children cannot claim Parent Relief for her, and vice versa.

Tax Planning Tip:
WMCR is applied after QCR by IRAS. If WMCR already reaches the $80,000 overall relief cap, QCR may be wasted. Where possible, allocate QCR to the father to maximize total household relief.

Automatic Reliefs (No Claim Required, but Must Be Aware of Cap)

These are automatically granted, but taxpayers should monitor them to avoid exceeding the $80,000 total relief cap.

Relief Type Conditions Amount
Earned Income Relief Based on age at end of YA. Below 55: $1,000
55–59: $6,000
≥60: $8,000
NS Men Relief For self, wife, and parents (each). Higher for key appointment holders or NS activities performed in preceding year. Self: $1,500–$5,000
Wife: $750
Each parent: $750
CPF Relief (Employee) Mandatory employee CPF contributions (employer portion excluded). Dollar-for-dollar, up to $20,400 (at salary ceiling, 20% contribution rate for age ≤55)

The above three are automatically included and count toward the $80,000 ADK (Total Personal Reliefs) cap.

Voluntary Contribution Reliefs (Strategic Planning)

These are also automatic once contributed, but require proactive action during the year.

Contribution Type Relief Limit Key Conditions
SRS Contributions $15,300 (SC/PR) / $35,700 (Foreigner) Dollar-for-dollar relief.
Voluntary CPF Top-ups (Own Account) $8,000 Only to SA, MA, or RA (not OA). Must not have reached Full Retirement Sum (SA/RA) or Basic Healthcare Sum (MA).
Voluntary CPF Top-ups (Loved Ones) $8,000 Upwards only (parents, parents-in-law, grandparents). Sideways (spouse/siblings) only if their income ≤ $8,000. Downwards (children) – no relief.
Self-Employed Voluntary CPF Additional up to $37,740 (or 37% of net trade income) On top of the $8,000 + $8,000. Dollar-for-dollar relief.
Platform Workers (Transitional Period) Varies Compulsory or voluntary contributions qualify for immediate relief.

Critical Cap Awareness

The total of all reliefs claimed (including automatic ones) cannot exceed $80,000 (relief cap). High earners with large WMCR, CPF, and SRS contributions may hit this cap. Any excess relief is wasted. Taxpayers should sequence contributions accordingly.

Summary Checklist

  • Confirm spouse income ≤ $8,000 for Spouse Relief.

  • Verify parent/grandparent income ≤ $8,000 for Parent Relief.

  • Check child eligibility for QCR (full-time study qualifies even if >16).

  • For working mothers: calculate WMCR based on birth year of child.

  • Stack GCR and Parent Relief for same grandparent if conditions met.

  • Ensure no double-claiming of same dependent across Spouse and Parent Relief.

  • Review CPF contributions before paying life insurance premiums.

  • For NS Men: confirm NS activity in prior year for higher tier.

  • Voluntary top-ups: direct only to SA/MA/RA, and only upward.

  • Monitor total reliefs against $80,000 cap before making SRS/voluntary CPF contributions.
