The move reflects a wider shift in the profession: accountants are no longer expected to focus only on financial reporting and compliance, but increasingly on assurance, advisory, governance, ESG reporting, risk management, and technology-enabled decision-making.

The refreshed Skills Framework maps career pathways and skills requirements across 44 job roles and 11 functional career tracks, including assurance, financial accounting, management accounting, internal audit, business valuation, tax, restructuring and insolvency, mergers and acquisitions, financial forensics, enterprise risk management, and sustainability reporting.

A central feature of the update is the integration of AI into the competency map. As routine accounting tasks become increasingly automated, ACRA’s refreshed framework positions AI as an enabling capability rather than a standalone technical specialisation. Accountants are expected to use AI-enabled tools to improve analysis, detect anomalies, validate information, support forecasting, and generate sharper insights for business leaders.

The framework also recognises sustainability reporting as a major growth area. With climate and ESG disclosure requirements becoming more important for companies, accountants are expected to play a stronger role in gathering sustainability data, testing the reliability of disclosures, translating ESG metrics into business insights, and supporting compliance with emerging reporting requirements.

According to the framework, in-demand skillsets for the next phase of accountancy include advanced data analytics and visualisation, artificial intelligence, sustainability reporting and assurance, and risk management and governance. These capabilities reflect the profession’s move from transactional work towards higher-value analytical, advisory, and assurance roles.

The update also highlights the continued relevance of professional judgement. While AI can automate routine processes and accelerate data analysis, the framework emphasises that accountants must still assess AI-generated outputs critically, apply ethical judgement, communicate insights clearly, and make decisions grounded in professional standards.

For employers, the refreshed Skills Framework provides a structured reference for workforce planning, job redesign, training, and career development. For individuals, it offers clearer visibility of progression pathways and the skills needed to move across traditional and emerging accountancy roles. For training providers, it gives direction on how accountancy programmes should evolve to include AI, analytics, sustainability, and governance capabilities.

The launch signals ACRA’s broader push to keep Singapore’s accountancy sector competitive as business needs change. By embedding AI and sustainability into the profession’s core skills architecture, the refreshed framework positions accountants as trusted advisors who can combine financial discipline, digital fluency, ethical judgement, and sustainability knowledge to support better business decisions.

As the accountancy profession continues to evolve, the message is clear: the future accountant will not be replaced by technology, but will be expected to work effectively with it. The next generation of accountancy professionals will need to be technically strong, digitally fluent, sustainability-ready, and capable of turning complex data into trusted insights.

The Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority (ACRA) has launched a refreshed Skills Framework for Accountancy, marking a significant update to Singapore’s accountancy talent roadmap as artificial intelligence, automation, data analytics, and sustainability reporting reshape the profession.
