Artificial intelligence is becoming an essential component of modern audit practice, particularly as audit clients increasingly adopt digital tools, automation, cloud systems and AI-enabled business processes. For audit firms, the practical value of AI lies not in replacing professional judgement, but in improving the efficiency, consistency and depth of audit procedures while preserving audit quality.

The audit profession has moved from largely manual, paper-based testing toward computer-assisted audit techniques, data analytics, automation and now AI-enabled workflows. Earlier tools allowed auditors to analyse larger datasets, but often required technical expertise and significant manual interpretation. Current AI tools can process larger volumes of structured and unstructured information, identify unusual patterns, summarise documents, generate analytics and support risk identification using natural-language prompts.

Across the audit lifecycle, AI can assist with client acceptance, planning, risk assessment, process understanding, fieldwork, financial statement analysis and reporting. Practical use cases include automated preparation of draft financial statements from trial balances, year-on-year variance analysis, summarisation of contracts or invoices, extraction of key financial information and generation of audit analytics. These tools can reduce time spent on repetitive tasks and allow audit teams to focus more on higher-value work such as evaluating risk, challenging management assumptions and forming audit conclusions.

However, AI output should not be accepted without review. Audit firms must maintain a “human-in-the-loop” approach, ensuring that engagement teams understand the tools used, assess whether the output is reasonable and apply professional scepticism. AI can support analysis and pattern detection, but it does not replace accountability, professional judgement or the auditor’s responsibility for audit conclusions.

From a governance perspective, firms should identify all technological resources used in audit practice, including audit platforms, data analytics tools, internally developed applications, AI tools, independence systems and other technology-enabled resources. These should be considered within the firm’s system of quality management, including risk assessment, control design, implementation, monitoring and remediation.

Key risk areas include data confidentiality, cybersecurity, reliance on third-party service providers, user competency, reproducibility of AI outputs, data quality and explainability. Firms should avoid uploading confidential client information into unsecured public AI platforms and should document how AI has been used, including prompts, inputs, outputs and the review performed.

When auditing clients that rely heavily on technology, auditors should also consider the client’s IT environment, relevant applications, automated controls, general IT controls, cloud arrangements and service organisations. Where applicable, auditors should evaluate service organisation controls, including SOC reports, and consider whether technology-related risks may affect the financial statements.

The practical message for audit firms is clear: AI adoption should be deliberate, controlled and aligned with audit quality objectives. Firms should start by identifying repetitive or high-volume audit tasks suitable for AI support, assess the risks of using AI for those tasks, establish safeguards, train staff and monitor tool performance over time. AI-enabled audit practice is no longer merely optional; it is becoming part of the expected digital capability of the profession.
